ETEC 643: Educational Research
What is the educational research
Educational research is a systematic, disciplined inquiry applied to the gathering,
analyzing and reporting information that addresses educational problems and questions.
(McMillan, 2012).

ETEC 643 Project
In educational research's most simple form, research involves four steps:
The question phase is initiated with an educational problem, which offers an important research proposal for research (McMillan, 2016).
Research questions stand for an orientation of my research. Hence my research questions were :
-
Quantitative: What are the effects on ELP students memorize vocabulary by using Quizlet?
-
Qualitative: What is the ELP students’ perception of using Quizlet to memorize vocabularies?
Three types of research designs: Quantitative, Qualitative,mixed-methods (McMillan, 2016).
In this research, I applied explanatory mixed-methods to gather quantitative data first and then use qualitative data to explain and elaborate quantitative results.
Quantitative Design: Experimental method- I picked twenty vocabularies to create Quizlet studying setting and paper-version vocabularies list separately. I gathered the "effect" aspect data by comparing the two groups' vocabularies' scores from the control group(recite vocabularies by flashcards) and the experimental group (Quizlet).
Qualitative Design: I conducted one-on-one open-ended interviews with experimental group members to attempt to figure out the "attitude" to use Quizlet in learning vocabulary.
Results include data collection and analysis collected by using descriptive or inferential statistics (McMillan, 2016).
Quantitative: I used the central tendency as descriptive statistics and used the t-Test technique as inferential statistics.
Qualitative: the coding scheme would help recognize the interviewees' answers and organize and analyze the qualitative data.
Quizlet can improve the efficiency of international students' memorizing vocabularies and stimulate their interest in memorizing words. At the same time, international students had a positive attitude to learning words by using Quizlet.
ETEC 643 Reflection
In ETEC 643, My biggest harvest knows how to use systematic methods to analyze quantitative data: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. For descriptive statistics, I used the excel file to calculate central tendency-mean, median, mode, stand deviation based on the raw data, Also, I applied the Two Samples Assuming Equal Variances t-test and calculate the P-value in the excel file to process inferential data. Next, for qualitative data analysis, I mastered using the coding scheme to gather participants' feedback to determine whether the Quizlet will benefit their vocabulary learning and analyze what defect of traditional learning.
